Sony’s next-gen console the Playstation 3 had a rather rocky start. Aside from Microsoft’s jump onto the sales floor with the early launch of the Xbox 360, their was the Nintendo Wii.
Here was a system that promised parents that their children would actually burn some calories while playing, and let’s face it, American’s are all for anything that burns calories, or promises 30 minutes Abs.
While this is a catchy way to reel in potential buyers, your average gamer doesn’t find jumping around and swinging a controller to be their idea of relaxation. Add in a small room, some of grandma’s breakables nearby, and the Wii could very well end up costing the consumer more than the systems itself costs.
The Playstation 3 on the other hand, is pretty much a gamer’s PC. Given the 40 or 60 gig hardrive, the Bluray disc player, and it’s compatability with pretty much anything with a USB port, this machine is almost a computer. The downside here is that the designers seem to have forgotten that they also created the Playstation 2. While the PS3 Claimes “limited” compatability, the gamer that slides in his favorite PS2 games will most likely see those dreaded words suddenly appear and engulf the flashy PS3 homepage: Unsupported Data.
The major delays from the PS3’s powerhouse franchises such as Final Fantasy XIII, and the overall flood of drab, shooter games across the market has given the Wii the edge in the departments of variety, though any gamer worth his cushy sitting chair can tell you, good things come in time.
As with almost everything there are flaws in the system, but overall the PS3 has much more to offer than it’s rivals at Nintendo. But, if you must buy the Wii system, just remember to move anything valuable to safety before you start a swinging frenzy as Mario runs from a Koopa Troopa.
